Father Erwin J. Bertke - September 29, 1917 to December 1, 2009 - Rest in Peace
Father
Erwin J. Bertke passed away on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at Mercy
Franciscan at West Park here in Cincinnati. He was at Resident Priest
at St. Lawrence for many years after he "retired" in 1992. Our Pastor
Fr. Mark Watkins said it best describing Fr. Bertke as a "priest's
priest." Fr.
Bertke served at many parishes in the Cincinnati area including St.
Joseph, St. Augustine, St. Louis, St. Vincent de Paul, St. William, St.
Dominic, and St. Simom the Apostle and outside the Cincinnati area at
St. Brigid (Xenia) and St. Paul (Yellow Springs). He also served as
Chaplain at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, as a Professor
at Purcell High School (now Purcell Marian) and as a teacher and
Athletic Director at his beloved Elder High School. On
a personal note from the webmaster: I loved Fr. Bertke's brand of
preaching, which some describe as kind of like "fire and brimstone." He
definately wanted all of us to understand the dangers of sin. He was
Athletic Director at Elder High School when my father attended Elder in
the 1940's. Fr. Bertke could still tell me stories about my father
which helped to give me some interesting memories since my father died
over 30 years ago. Those are things I will always remember about Fr.
Bertke. Thankfully he never knew how I almost wrecked his car back in
the 70's after installing an 8-tracker player for him in his car. I had
that angel working overtime that day. The
memories that I enjoy most were his praying to Our Blessed Mother at
each Sunday Mass and how that sometimes gruff exterior would turn to a
smile at me as I held my little granddaughter at church. God Bless you and keep you Fr. Bertke. We're all going to miss you. They just don't make 'em like you anymore. |
